BRAIINS PROJECT. LOGO CONTEST-CONCURSO DE LOGOS

16 de diciembre de 2020, por editorial2

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT NAVARRO VILLOSLADA

Our school has something to celebrate! The Internationalization Agency of the European Union has granted us a new Erasmus+ project.

The “BRAIINS: BRing AI In School” project will last 3 school years, from 2020 to 2023. Its aim is approaching  Artificial Intelligence to education to start making our students and our community aware of the importance of AI in the near future.

The project has just started and the first activity we have agreed with our partner schools has been a Logo contest to find the best logo to fit our goal.

This logo, made by an Italian student, has been the winner.

Imagen cedida por el autor.

However, we are extremely proud of the nice hard work our 4th graders (Arts and ICT Bilingual Programme’s pupils) have done and we would like you to see them all. You can find them not only on the panels in front of the 2nd graders’ corridor, but also below these lines (click on the author’s name to see it in real size).

You can also find two clips containing some of the logos and the explanation the authors have given to understand their projects.

How did I end up in New York City?

Raquel Ordoñez Ciriza. IES Navarro Villoslada

Wow, that is quite hard to trace. Obviously, living in the Big Apple is like a normal childhood fantasy, right? But it has been a long way, in which every step count.

I guess everything started in Navarro Villoslada, where you are probably reading these lines. The first time I heard about cell biology, genetics and biomedical research was in biology class, during my last year of high school. While trying to survive to end-of-year exams, university entrance tests and “Selectividad”, I realized that I was puzzled by the role our genes play in our cells. I wanted to know more about how the genes in the DNA of each cell tell them when to grow, work, divide and die.

And how when these instructions get mixed up, cells divide and grow out of control, causing cancer in any organ of the body. So, I decided to study Biochemistry at the University of Navarra, where I collaborated as an intern student in a research lab, and even go a summer internship in at the University of Michigan.

There is when I realized I wanted to be a scientist. But the scientific career is quite long and hard, so I spent another five years at university, doing a doctorate in biomedical research, at the Center for Applied Medical Research, also called CIMA.

If you are not familiar with biomedical research, you may picture a lonely scientist in a lab coat peering over a microscope to discover a new microbe. This does happen, of course, but during all these years I found out that research was much more than that, involving any field related to medicine, biology and pharma with a potential to heal and improve people’s lives. And that is exactly what took me here, to New York City, one of the cities with the greatest scientist community in the world. Here I work at the Institute for Systems Genetics, trying to understand the basis gene regulation, and its application to human diseases, including cancer.

But of course, you cannot do a good job, if your job is all you do! There is no point in living in New York City if you do not enjoy all the experiences this city offers. There is always so much to do around, that staying home or at work all day long is just not an option. One of my favorite spots in the city? Broadway! I guess my fondness for scenic arts started also back in Pamplona, when I joined the Theatre Workshop at Navarro Villoslada in the play “Primera Vez. Suite ADSLcente”. Since then, I always wanted to watch a real Broadway play, and believe me, this is a “must do” in the city. Here, culture, music and theatre are just extraordinary. But so are the museums (MOMA, Natural History, the Met), small art galleries, opera, dance, festivals, sporting, restaurants… You could never see it all.

But if there is something I love about this city is diversity. With over 200 languages spoken here, and around 40% of New York City population born outside of the United States, the culture, habits and food are from almost every world culture. I think everybody should live in New York City at least for a period of time. Work here, talk to random people in the subway, find out how nice, resilient and creative they are, and of course, learn to play chess. Definitely, New York City is the world’s best teacher.

Why don’t you take the chance? As locals say, nothing compares to New York. Since the very first day I moved in, I wake up every morning feeling incredibly fortunate to live here. Now is your time. Do it, step by step. Work to get it. And some day we can meet in the Big Apple.

Students of Navarro Villoslada around the world

Aarón Ochoa (2º bachillerato 2017-18)

Igem.UPNA is a team formed by 15 students from different degrees in the Public University of Navarre: Biotechnology , Data Science, Sciences and Biomedical Engineering.  We have been working the whole summer in a synthetic biology project. In order to understand our project we have to be concerned about the issues that nitrates and heavy metals cause in the environment and our own health. Both nitrates and heavy metals are substances that produce pollution, which comes from plants illnesses to human tumors.

Here in Navarre, farmers are dealing with nitrate problems that affect their plantations. Because of this we thought in creating a eco-friendly method to find the presence of nitrates and different heavy metals, in this case cadmium, mercury and cooper.

We modified genetically bacteria, using different techniques we were able to design DNA and introduce it to our bacterias. Finally we obtained bacteria that change their colour whenever they detect the presence of nitrates and heavy metals, we have this catalogue:

  • – Nitrate turns yellow
  • – Cadmium turns pink
  • – Mercury turns purple
  • – Cooper turns blue

When the concentration of each substance is higher, the colour produced by the bacteria becomes more intense.

Finally we went to present our project to Boston on late October, where different teams from all around the world were also presenting their projects. This competition is called iGEM, and it was created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). First of all we did a presentation in front of a jury composed by 6 professionals, and after that the judges came to see poster in order to ask us some questions about the project.
Unfortunately we did not win a «big trophy» but we received a golden medal because of achieving different goals in terms of a complete project.

It was a great experience that we really enjoyed as we were able to use what we are learning in our respective degrees, doing lab work, designing our own webs and trying to find fination. And we were also able to meet a lot of people in the science area. For last but not least as a student from this high school I really want to encourage you all to study science degrees as I+D is a synonymous for progress and future!!!!

EBAU

11 de febrero de 2020, por editorial3

Iker Torres, 2ºB bachillerato

As the end of this year comes to an end, we , the students, cannot help thinking, yet again, about the exam that awaits us in just some months; the EBAU. For most of us, getting good grades at the end of the school year won’t be  enough, as right after we will have to face the biggest and most important exam in our whole life, so far at least. Many students will have to rely on said exam’s results in order to be able to choose their desired careers.

Ever since September 2018, our education has been fully directed towards the EBAU. Thus, it is pretty much natural to feel somewhat anxious about this event. In the end, it will have a significant impact on how our life will be from that point onwards. To many, it seems ridiculous just how much value is given to the EBAU results in comparison with the grades of two entire years. In addition to that, having to study two whole academic courses in about a month is no less than outrageous. That being said, fellow students, we must remember that we do not start from scratch. For those who managed to pass, the work is pretty much done. After all, it’s just reviewing what you have already studied, and surely you will find it easier than you thought.

My advice would be calm down and think of it in a relaxing way; there’s not much to worry about, so you will feel at ease. If you have succeeded throughout the year, why wouldn’t you get the required qualifications up to the mark in an exam whose subjects you have already dealt in class? That doesn’t mean, however, that you should move on and just forget about it.. There will be much work to do, that cannot be avoided, but by now you should understand why you’re doing it. That may help you to motivate in your study, so, even if it’s tedious, you’ll manage it. If you ask someone who has gone through this, they are likely to tell you that it’s not the hell you have imagined  to be; as long as you have studied for it.

For now, it is enough to make an effort to understand what’s being taught in class, and to achieve good results in upcoming exams. It’s no use worrying now about something so distant; let’s  focus on the present, on yesterday’s homework and tomorrow’s exam. For the moment let’s have some rest and enjoy our daily tasks.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

11 de febrero de 2020, por editorial3

If you really like fiction and adventure movies, the Harry Potter saga is what you are definitely looking for. The first film of this saga, based on the books of J.K. Rowling, tells the story of Harry Potter, a wizard boy, special for being the only human who has survived an attack by Lord Voldemort.

Harry grows up on Privet Drive, a street located on the outskirts of London. He lives with his uncles and his cousin, the Dursley family. He has to live with them because his parents were killed by the unnamed (Voldemort). Harry receives very bad treatment from this family and rescued by Hagrid, he began his studies in the privileged school of Hogwarts. Here he meets those who will be his best accomplices in this adventure, Hermione and Ron.

This film has got plenty of special effects, but it shows that it is already 18 years old and there are already better recording techniques than those used then. In addition, the cast is magnificent, since each actor and actress captures very well what his character wants to convey on screen.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone is a really enjoyable film which is suitable for any public of any age. A classic movie not to be missed!

THE IMPOSSIBLE

11 de febrero de 2020, por editorial3

The impossible is a film based on real events. In Spain, It was released on the 11th October 2012 and It was a box-office hit. The main character are the mother, father and the three children. This family went to Thailand for christmas holidays.

At the beginning of the film, the family is in the swimming pool of the hotel. Suddenly, a tsunami engulf them. The family is separated and some of them are injured. For this reason, they have difficulty in meeting. They pass days without seeing each other but they keep looking for their family.

Finally, by chance, they end up meeting in the hospital, but the mother is badly injured and It is very  possible she will not survive.

In my opinion, It is an awesome film. The movie teaches us to value our family. Something unexpected could happen at any time and you might never see them again.
